1. Decide what you needs are
This is the very first aspect to be taken care of while starting off for apartment hunt. Take sometime off from everything, sit down in a calm atmosphere and list out all the features that you would need in your apartment. Just check out some of the questions below that will help you through the problem.
- What is the size of the apartment I need?
- Where do I want the apartment? Do I need it near my college/workplace?
- Do I need more than one bedroom?
- Where will I put my car, bike etc.?
- Do I need a swimming pool or a fitness center?
- Can I keep my pets in the apartment?
These are only some of the questions that you will probably come across. Each question and its answer will change from person to person. Well there is a question that all of you would have to face. How much can I afford for the apartment?
Ask yourself these questions and find the answers for them. Even if some of your requirements are not met by the apartment, find out if you can find a cheap alternative for it. For instance all your requirements except that of a fitness center are fulfilled by the apartment. You don't want to lose the apartment because it is otherwise perfect for you but you awfully need a fitness center. So what would you do? Well it would be good if you feel you can do your work out in a nearby fitness center.
Once you have set up your mind all about what you actually expect from the apartment, you can set off on your hunt. This method would surely save a lot of your time and energy.
2. Don't ever lose heart, keep trying
Don't ever get disheartened only because you couldn't find the right apartment. The moment you start feeling stressed your search will become a whole lot more difficult that it was and that would be the last thing you ever want. So stay focused whatever happens. Whenever you feel you are losing your hope to find the 'perfect apartment' try to think of the happiness you would feel when you at last reach your goal.
There are a whole lot of people who have lost what they thought was their dream apartment for a silly reason and got disappointed but at last landed up in an apartment far more better than anything they could have even imagined. Just hope for such a thing to happen in your life.
3. Expectations should be realistic
Never hope that you can find your dream home with one or two days or else you will be disappointed for sure. There wouldn't be many apartment hunters who would have found a suitable arrangement very easily. Don't expect anything much in your case too. So if you find the right apartment without much hustle bustle, amazing. If that doest happen you can still be happy and hope that you would be able to reach your goal soon.
4. Discuss with your roommate (if any)
This is for those people who have got a roommate to live with. It would be better if both of you go together to look the apartments listed so that you would know if it matches both your dreams. But if both of you are too busy with your own things to go together you could probably take turns to go and see each apartments. You could split the list into half and both of you can go and deal with different brokers the same day or else you can go to see the apartments on alternate days. So if one of you feels that you he/she has found the dream home. Both of you can go together to see it and decide if or not to finalize the deal.
5. Keep track of the apartments you have visited
It can be guaranteed that you will lose track of the different features connected with a particular apartment once you have seen a dozen of them. So it would be better to keep notes on the apartments you have already seen. The notes should contain all the basic information like the address of the apartments, the owner's or the broker's contact details, the pros and cones of the apartments. You can also add additional information like the promise of a month of rentless stay in the apartment that the owner promised and so on. If you have got brochures, photos, or any other hard copy concerning with the apartments keep them safely in a file.
6. Don't hesitate to clear your doubts
This is the most important aspect to be taken care of while hunting for apartments. You are the one who will have to live in the apartment once you choose it, so don't hesitate to clear any doubts you may have regarding the apartment. If you feel that the owner is not giving honest answers to your questions then don't it would be better you stop the deal right there.
Now, if you are paying a visit to the apartment you want to rent and the current renter is there, feel free to ask him any questions you have.
The questions could be anything that you feel important for you to know if you have got to live in that building. They can be something like the following
- What is the electricity bill each month?
- Does the noise from the nearby apartments cause a problem?
- Are the neighbors helpful?
Well, by now you would be feeling a bit more comfortable about the idea of starting an apartment hunt. So, all The Best to all of you who are about to start an apartment hunt and those who are half way. And for those who have tried their might to find the perfect apartment but had to be satisfied with an apartment that is no where close to their 'dream home', better luck next time.
